Britney Spears News - Us Weekly
Britney Spears was one of the biggest female teen pop stars of the late ‘90s and remains one of the world’s best-selling music artists. The former All New Mickey Mouse Club cast member became a teen idol after the record-breaking releases of her first two albums, …Baby One More Time (1999) and Oops!… I Did It Again (2000).
The Princess of Pop released her third album, Britney, in 2001 and made her movie debut in Crossroads the following year. In 2003, her success continued with her fourth album, In the Zone, on which she collaborated with her longtime idol Madonna.
The pop star began a high-profile relationship with former Mickey Mouse Club castmate Justin Timberlake in 1998, but the pair called it quits in 2002 after four years of dating. Spears made headlines in January 2004 when she wed her childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas. Their marriage was annulled 55 hours later. By July of that year, she was engaged to her backup dancer Kevin Federline. The twosome chronicled their whirlwind relationship on the reality show Britney & Kevin: Chaotic. They tied the knot in October 2004 and went on to welcome sons Sean Preston and Jayden James in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
Spears filed for divorce from Federline in 2006 and thus began a string of personal struggles in the spotlight. Her ups and downs continued throughout 2007, including an infamous head-shaving incident, multiple rehab stints and a psychiatric hospitalization.
Despite her struggles, Spears released the successful albums Blackout (2007) and Circus (2008). Her lengthy legal battle with Federline came to an end in 2008 when they agreed to share joint custody of their children. That same year, she was placed under a conservatorship, surrendering the power to make legal, financial and business decisions to a team of people that included her father, Jamie Spears.
Britney released three more albums — Femme Fatale (2011), Britney Jean (2013) and Glory (2016) — and served as a judge for one season of the U.S. version of The X Factor in 2012.
From 2013 to 2017, Britney embarked on a lucrative Las Vegas residency titled Britney: Piece of Me. She was set to launch a second residency, Domination, in 2019 but announced an indefinite career hiatus that January before seeking mental health treatment again in March.
In response to the widely popular #FreeBritney movement, Britney publicly broke her silence about wanting to end her conservatorship during an emotional court hearing in June 2021. At the time, she opened up about the constraints of her conservatorship and was granted the right to choose her own attorney for the first time.
Shortly after Britney appointed Mathew Rosengart as part of her legal team, her father stepped down from his role on her conservatorship team. In November 2021, a judge officially ended Britney’s 13-year conservatorship.
After her marriage to Federline, Britney was engaged to her former manager Jason Trawick from 2011 to 2013. She later dated David Lucado for more than a year before meeting personal trainer Sam Asghari on the set of her 2016 music video for “Slumber Party.” The duo announced their engagement in September 2021 after nearly five years of dating. In May 2022, one month after announcing she and Asghari were expecting their first baby together, Britney revealed she suffered a pregnancy loss. Us confirmed in August 2023 that Asghari filed for divorce.
Spears’ highly anticipated memoir, The Woman in Me, was released in October 2023 and became an instant bestseller.
