The medical drama Grey’s Anatomy premiered on ABC in March 2005. The Shonda Rhimes-created series, narrated by Ellen Pompeo’s character, Meredith Grey, follows the personal and professional lives of surgical interns and their supervisors at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital (later named Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital).
The original cast of Grey’s included Pompeo (Meredith), Sandra Oh (Christina Yang), Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens), Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), T.R. Knight (George O’Malley), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke), James Pickens (Richard Webber) and Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd “McDreamy”).
Throughout its run, the Grey’s cast has changed significantly, with only three original members remaining by the 19th season in 2022 (Pompeo, Wilson and Pickens).
Grey’s is the longest-running scripted primetime show currently airing on ABC and is highly decorated, winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series in 2007. The show has been nominated for 38 Primetime Emmy Awards through the years, including two nods for Outstanding Drama Series.
Grey’s Anatomy has three spinoff series, including Private Practice, Station 19, and Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team
