About

Mariah Carey is one of the best-selling and most-awarded female artists in the music industry. Known for her five-octave vocal range and use of the whistle register, Carey has won five Grammy Awards from 34 nominations.

Carey began singing at age 3 and got her big break after handing her demo tape to Tommy Mottola, the head of Columbia Records. Her 1990 self-titled debut album topped the Billboard 200 for eleven consecutive weeks and earned her a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

Carey has released 15 albums, including the chart-toppers Merry Christmas (1994), Daydream (1995), Butterfly (1997), Rainbow (1999) and The Emancipation of Mimi (2005). She has 19 No. 1 hits, including “We Belong Together,” “Always Be My Baby,” “Hero,” and “All I Want For Christmas Is You” — and the latter’s success has earned her the unofficial title, the “Queen of Christmas.”

In 2022, Carey became the first female artist to sell over 70 million albums in the U.S. Outside of music, Carey has ventured into acting, with notable roles in Precious (2009) and The Butler (2013). She also served as a judge on season 12 of American Idol, completed five concert residencies and 14 tours and released documentaries Mariah’s World (2016) and Mariah Carey: Darling Diva (2021). Carey’s memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, was published in 2020.

In 1993, Carey tied the knot with Mottola, but the couple split five years later. Carey went on to date Derek Jeter, model Marcus Schenkenberg, Mexican singer Luis Miguel and Eminem before marrying Nick Cannon in 2008. The couple welcomed twins Moroccan and Monroe in 2011 and separated in 2014.

Carey moved on with Australian billionaire James Packer in 2015. The couple were engaged for 10 months in 2016. Following their breakup, Carey began dating her backup dancer Bryan Tanaka.
